WM as a whole is not a large railroad – could easily model the entire line (with compromises). Based upon Givens and Druthers, each segment was assessed:
- Baltimore to Hagerstown via the East Sub
- Baltimore to Hagerstown via the Hanover Sub
Not quite enough mountainous (big mountains) terrain, no coal mines
Traffic-wise, routes were excellent.
Since the WM was part of the Alphabet Route, run-through traffic was abundant.
Combined with coal and the trains would be nicely varied.
- Hagerstown to Connellsville (West Sub & Connellsville Subs)
Same attributes as East sub
Mountains - better, line doesn’t meander enough since most of it was build relatively late for a railroad
- Cumberland to Elkins, WV (Thomas Sub)
Meandering line – follows Potomac River valley as far as it could, crossing ridge dividing Potomac & Cheat River watersheds
Coal, wood chips, pulpwood
Mountains, mountains, mountains!
